       How to use Google Voice

Google Voice is one of those services of which people tend to say, “Is that still around? Does anyone still use it?” But don’t be fooled by its longevity: people do still use it — and it’s possible that you may want to as well.
Originally called GrandCentral before it was bought by Google in 2009 and only intermittently updated since, Voice is a telecommunications service that works in conjunction with your existing phone service and offers a free secondary phone number with voicemail, SMS capabilities, and other services. Once your number is assigned (you are given a variety to choose from), you can associate it with one or several cellular or landline phone numbers.
When I first signed up for Google Voice in 2009, phone carriers were still making it unnecessarily difficult to move your phone number if you were changing carriers, so having a phone number that easily moved to whatever device you wanted to use made life a lot easier. That’s no longer the case; but over the years, I’ve found Voice immensely helpful in a number of other ways.
For example, it’s useful if you have more than one phone, and want to make sure that the important people in your life can easily find you; if they call your Voice number, you can set Voice to ring all of your phones. You can create a separate business number on your personal phone. It’s helpful if you occasionally use temporary phones (for example, I found it very handy when I was reviewing phones and wanted to carry one around with me for a couple of weeks). You can have a number to give to vendors and organizations that you want to keep in touch with, but which might sell the number to spam callers. And so on.
Google Voice is, of course, not the only service that offers additional numbers for your phone; there are other services out there as well, such as Hushed and Burner. Although Voice’s interface is a bit old-fashioned (despite a relatively recent update), and (this being Google) there is always the chance that the company will suddenly decide to get rid of it, it’s a very good alternative.

You can sign up for Google Voice either on the web or by downloading the Google Voice app from Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. I found it slightly easier to do the initial sign-up via the web; however, the process is nearly identical on a mobile phone.

SIGN UP FOR GOOGLE VOICE

  • Go to https://voice.google.com/. If you haven’t already, sign in to your Google account; if you don’t have a Google account, you’ll be asked to create one. You can read the Terms of Service and the company’s Privacy Policy if you like. Do you accept them? Okay, press “Continue.”
  • Choose your Google Voice number. Google will give you a choice of several locations in your region. If you don’t like the first few numbers, you can keep clicking on “Show More” until you find one you like. (Not ad infinitum, of course; eventually, you do run out.) Click on “Verify.” Verify what? Well, once you’ve selected your number, you have to verify that you have an existing phone number to associate with the Google Voice number.
  • Note: you can only associate a single phone number with a Voice number. However, if you’ve already got a Google Voice number associated with your current number and you want another, there is a way around it — use another virtual number. For example, I was able to create a Google Voice number using a Hushed number, and you should be able to use a Skype number as well.
  • You’ll be asked to enter your existing phone number so you can be texted a six-number code (if you don’t want to text, you can opt to receive a phone call). Once you’ve got the code, enter it where indicated.

hat’s it! You’ve linked your new Google Voice number to your existing number.
So what now?

ADJUST VOICE TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

Well, there are a number of adjustments you can make, depending on how you want to use the service. A few are described below. These were tested using the mobile app on an Android phone; the interface for iOS devices is similar.
All of the following tweaks are available in the Settings section of the app. If you’re using the Android app, reach them by tapping on the three parallel lines on the top left of the home screen, and then choosing Settings from the resulting menu.

USE VOICE TO MAKE CALLS

  • Scroll down to and tap on “Calls started from this device’s phone app.”
  • Choose whether you want to make calls using your Google Voice number or your phone’s number. You can also choose which you want to use each time you make a call, or just use Voice for international calls. (Domestic calls through Google Voice are free, while international calls do have a fee. The fee for international calls is likely less than your carrier’s, however.)

RECEIVE INCOMING CALLS USING VOICE

  • Scroll down to and tap on “Call forwarding.”
  • You’ll see a list of all the devices you’ve registered with Voice. Toggle “on” those that you want to use to receive Voice calls.

CHANGE YOUR VOICEMAIL GREETING

  • Scroll down to and tap on “Voicemail greeting.”
  • You can use a general “The Google subscriber you have called is not available. Please leave a message after the tone,” or a slightly more personalized “<name of person> is not available. Please leave a message after the tone.” Or you can record your own.

CHOOSE HOW YOU ARE NOTIFIED WHEN YOU HAVE A MESSAGE OR MISS A CALL.

Scroll down to and tap on “Message notifications” or “Missed call notifications.” There are a variety of options you have here; the choices are basically the same in both cases. Options include:
  • Toggle notifications on and off.
  • Display your notifications in the status bar.
  • Use lock screen notifications.
  • Choose a ringtone for a notification and / or vibrate the phone when a message comes in.

WhatsApp vs. Facebook Messenger: 5 main differences users should know

WhatsApp vs. Facebook Messenger: 5 main differences users should know

Facebook owned WhatsApp is bigger than Facebook Messenger, its sibling, and chances are that you are on one of those apps, if not both. The two messaging apps have a combined user base of approximately 2.8 billion people and each of them process billions of messages daily. Both the apps have certain strengths and weaknesses. Facebook Messenger is closely integrated with your Facebook profile whereas WhatsApp is about the contacts you have stored on your phone. At the core, both the platforms help you to communicate with friends and have features like free calling and group messaging, however, the two apps cannot be more dissimilar from each other.

Here's the comparison between WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Pick the one you feel is right for you.
Privacy: WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption to keep your messages private. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the participants of a conversation can see the messages and content that it contains. Facebook Messenger encrypts messages by default from the sender to its server, and then encrypts them again between the server and the recipient.
Image transfer: WhatsApp enforces a limit to number of images you can send. There is no such limit on Messenger. Messenger is well integrated with Facebook and deploys facial recognition to identify your friends in the photos.
Calling: Placing calls via WhatsApp is preferred because it lets you place calls even in places where signal strength is weak. WhatsApp works smoothly on 3G, Wi-Fi, and even 2G networks. Meanwhile, group calling is better on Messenger, especially when you need to call 50 people! WhatsApp allows you to start a group call with not more than 4 people.
Design: It's a personal choice but Messenger design is a lot more modern than that of WhatsApp. Messenger has features like gradients, which lets you use multiple colours to customise your chat bubbles in conversation to reflect your mood or topic of conversation. There is also a 'dark mode' in the pipeline. Messenger is keeping pace with the times, and its time WhatsApp also adopts some of these modern ideas.
Delete sent messages: WhatsApp lets you delete sent message unlike the Messenger. There are reports that Messenger is testing the feature but the release date isn't confirmed yet.

Although most consumers are satisfied with their mobile phone service, a range of issues were identified, especially by those living in rural areas. The study found that a higher percentage of those living in rural areas experience issues than those in more urban parts of the country.
The majority of those surveyed indicated that they were satisfied with their mobile phone network coverage at home with 77 per cent saying it was good compared to 23 per cent who were dissatisfied.

A range of issues can affect the quality of mobile phone service, including the handset itself and signal coverage. Switching either their handset or provider may improve the experience of some consumers.
“In rural Ireland indoor connectivity remains an issue,” said said ComReg chairman Garrett Blaney.
He expressed the view that problems surrounds rural broadband access would “primarily be solved by the continued adoption of services such as native WiFi calling, availing of Mobile Phone Repeaters and the rollout of the National Broadband Plan,”

   How to use WhatsApp

image

Want to save money on your mobile phone bill? Then switch to WhatsApp. The free mobile messaging app lets you send messages, and make voice and video calls from your smartphone over the internet rather than your mobile network for free. So when you’re connected to wifi, whether at home, at work or in the local coffee shop, it won’t cost you a penny. Here’s everything you need to know about how to use WhatsApp.

What is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free app for iPhonesAndroid smartphones, Windows Phone and Mac laptops and Windows PC. It allows you to send messages, pictures, videos and even voice recordings, as well as make voice and video calls over the internet for free, rather than using your mobile network which costs you money. iPhone owners can do this already with other iPhones, iPads and Mac computers using iMessage and FaceTime but this is ideal if you want to communicate with someone who has an Android smartphone or vice versa. It’s worth noting if you’re not connected to wi-fi, WhatsApp uses your mobile data connection. As a guide, a 10-minute video call uses 5MB of mobile data.

Where can I get WhatsApp?

If you’re using a smartphone, head to your app store and search for WhatsApp. Want to get WhatsApp on your computer? Then visit the WhatsApp website and download it from there.

How to send a message

To send a message, open WhatsApp and press the Chat button at the bottom of the screen (speech bubble). Press the compose button in the top right hand corner – it looks like a pen on a square of paper – and then either scroll through your contact list or use the search box at the top of the screen to find the person you want to message. You’ll be presented with a chat screen. Tap on the white box and type your message. You can attach pictures, videos, documents or even a person’s contact details by pressing the + symbol to the left of the white box. Press the Blue arrow to the right of the white box to send your message.
GHI TIP: Don’t want to type? Press and hold the microphone button to the right of the white box and speak your message. It’ll be sent as a voice note. Alternatively dictate your message. Tap on the white box to bring up your keyboard. Press the microphone button and dictate your message. The phone will automatically transcribe this into the message box.
Once you’ve sent your message, you will see a combination of coloured ticks in the bottom right-hand corner.;
  • One grey tick indicates the message hasn’t been received yet (possibly as the recipient doesn’t have an internet connection).
  • Two grey ticks means it’s been received but not read
  • Two blue ticks means it’s been read
  • A grey clock means you don’t have an internet connection so the message can’t be sent at present but it will be sent as soon as you do get a web connection.
You can turn this feature off so people can’t see if their message has been read or not by heading to Settings. Choose Account, then Privacy and use the slider next to Read Receipts to turn it off.

    How to delete a message

Sent a message by accident? If it hasn’t been read then you can delete the message. Just press and hold, then select Delete and remove it from the chat. However the recipient will see a message that says 'This message was deleted'.

How to stop people seeing you're online

WhatsApp shows your contacts when you were last online (called a timestamp). To see this, they just need to open the chat they have with you and at the top underneath your name will be the time you were last in WhatsApp. If you’re using the app at that moment, they will see that your are online or the word ‘typing’ if you are writing a message. If you find this too intrusive, you can turn it off by heading to Settings. Choose Account, then Privacy, followed by Last Seen and choose Nobody.

How to create a group chat

Want to message a number of people in one go so you can all converse? Create a group chat. To do this, press the Chat button at the bottom of the screen, followed by the compose button in the top right-hand corner. Now press New Group from the top of the screen and select the contacts you want to talk to. Tap Next and you’ll be able to add a subject for the group and even an icon, which will appear where the contact’s photo usually does. Then you’ll be free to type a message as usual.

    How to make a call

WhatsApp also allows you to make video and voice calls. Press the Calls button (phone icon) at the bottom of the screen. Want to call someone in your contacts list? Then press the icon in the top right-hand corner (a phone with a + symbol) and then scroll through your contacts. From the screen the appears you’ll be able to turn video on by tapping the video call button (it’s an audio call by default).
GHI TIP: Want to talk to more than one person? Press the Add Participant icon (an outline of a head with a +) symbol in the top right-hand corner when you’re on a call. Scroll through you contact list and select the person you want to join the call.

    How to share a status

You can post images, videos and GIFs as a status that disappear after 24 hours, just like Instagram stories. Press the status icon in the bottom left hand corner when you open WhatsApp, then press Add to My Status and you’ll be able to select a picture from your phone or take a new image. You can even annotate it.

Stop pictures and videos being saved to your phone’s memory

WhatsApp automatically saves photos and videos you’ve been sent via the app to your smartphone, but this can take up valuable space. If you’re struggling to accommodate all the media you get sent, go to Settings, Chats and then switch off Save to Camera Roll. On Android phones this is sometimes called Media Visibili
